Man, has it been a week! One more day of the North American International Auto Show and back to school I go. This is my third year working with Chrysler as a product specialist and my first time working the biggest auto show in the nation. It has been ... an experience. Haha.
This job really is a lot of fun. I get to travel all over the country, expenses paid, meet new people, and learn about cars. Traveling is probably my favorite part about it all next to all the awesome people I meet on a daily basis. The worst part though, is having to wear high heels for 8 hours a day. Combating against blisters and sore knees has been an ongoing fight. But, I think I have won the battle.
Fashionable heels and pain-free feet are not mutually exclusive. But there are things you can do to help prevent/reduce the amount of pain while wearing heels:
Make sure you are wearing the right size shoes.
Wearing heels that are too big or too small can cause all sorts of problems. This is probably the biggest mistake most women make. Shoes that are too big will cause your feet to rub and slide in the shoe which is no good. Make sure to get your feet sized and measured to prevent this from happening.
The thicker the heel, the better.
Skinny heels cause your feet to wobble around. Chunkier heels help you to distribute your body weight more evenly. I invested in a pair of Rockport pumps from Nordstrom. The heel was thicker than other brands and the leather was super flexible. This helped to reduce the amount of rubbing experienced on my little toes.
Invest in insoles.
I have extremely narrow feet with high arches. Most of the shoes I purchase just don't accommodate my skinny feet or support my arch enough, causing lower back, knee, heel, and the balls of my feet pain. I have tried putting gauze, maxi pads, and wearing dress socks to diminish the throbbing pain. This past week I used Dr. Scholl's Tri-Comfort Orthotics and I was pain free! They are around $10 a pair and so worth the money.
Take breaks and let your feet rest.
Every two hours or so, take your heels off and let your toes spread and feet relax for a bit. I did this throughout my 8 hour shifts for about 20 minutes at a time and it helped so much.
After a long day, soak your feet.
At the end of each evening, I would head to the bathroom, hop up on the counter, and soak my feet in the sink. You can use just warm water or go the extra step and add Epsom Salt. The epsom salt will heal any blisters and will soothe your aching feet.
What do you do to get through a long day of wearing heels?
Check out some pictures of friends, family, and co-workers from the auto show. I also got featured in the Detroit Free Press! Whoo Hoo.
