After reading "Managing Teams for Dummies", I found some super helpful tips on how to grow and develop a self-motivated team.
- Find the right people.
- Hold regular team meetings. Communication is key and meeting on a regular basis allows for message consistency and exchange of new ideas to be shared.
- Expanding team responsibilities one step at a time. Developing a self-managed team is the ultimate goal, but it doesn't happen over night. Team members need to figure out various supervisory routines in their daily functions. When taking that next step in assigning responsibilities, make sure to establish clear expectations, define parameters, provide training, set up checkpoints, evaluate results, then set up new goals.
- Continuously address issues and making improvements. Nothing is ever perfect and there is always room for improvement. Maintain accountability of team members by having periodic reviews of progress. When people don't know what to do, show them and coach them. If you want a self-managed team, rarely volunteer solutions yourself. You want the team members to take responsibility for addressing issues and then making their solutions work.
